Matt Fisher, Tobi Moriarty, and Dan Moriarty are the 2009 Lightning World Champions

Malletts Bay Boat Club, Colchester, Vermont.
At the beginning of the final beat of the final race of the 2009 Lightning
World Championship, any of the top three boats had a shot at claiming the
title. The day began with Matt Fisher, from Westerville, Ohio, in first
place with 33 points. David Starck, from Amherst, New York, was 5 points
back in second place and four-time World Champion Tito Gonzales, from Champa,
Chile was in third with 43 points.
Gonzales started the final leg in first, Fisher was seventh, and Starck
had jumped back up to ninth from very deep in the fleet. With Gonzales
leading, Fisher had to finish in the top 10, and within 5 points of Starck
to win the Championship. Gonzales went on to win the race and Starck slipped
by Fisher to finish in the fifth spot. But with a seventh place finish,
Fisher, along with crew Tobi and Dan Moriarty, held on to claim the 2009
World Champion title.

up the mast retrieving it during the start sequence.

1245 - All clear. The final race for the World championship is under way.
1244 - Start - Unofficial: 78, 05 were OCS but went back and cleared
1240 - I flag up. Lifejacket flag is also up
1239 - Back in a start sequence
1238 - General recall down.
1232 - Start - General recall. Wind is really blowing now
1227 - Warning Sequence for the final race of the regatta. The course is
windward/leeward with five legs. Wind is about 15 knots from the northwest
with small puffs.
1215 - Wind is up to 10-15. Start boat is reanchoring
1200 - Start boat is anchored
1145 - Wind is about 5 from the west
1100 - Postpone flag is up. We typically see the wind shut off from the
old direction and then fill from the new direction (rather than shifting to the
new direction).
1055 - Wind has dropped to almost nothing. Race Committee is probably
going to postpone. It is pretty wet.
1035 - The skies are clearing to the west. Course is getting set up.
1015 - About 10 knots from the southwest right now. Boats are making their
way to the course

0930 - Harbor Start
0915 - No one seems to be in a hurry to head out
0900 - Cold and rainy. Looking at an on time harbor start at 0930.
It is currently blowing about 20 out in the race area.
0745 - It is going to be windy. A strong cold front will push through the
area this morning triggering rain showers. Initially the winds should be
from the west at 15 to 20. The wind will shift to the northwest with the
passage of the front as the post frontal pressure gradient tightens. Once
the wind shifts, we can expect winds to be in the 20 to 30 knot range and quite
gusty. There is a Lake Wind Advisory.
